Habitat III

Habitat III is the third United Nations conference on housing and sustainable urban development. Twenty years after the Habitat II conference in Istanbul, Habitat III constitutes a major event on the issue of cities, in a context marked by the new challenges of urbanization. The Habitat III Conference was held in Quito (Ecuador) from October 17 to 20, 2016 on the theme: Sustainable urban development: the future of urbanization?

Fostering global commitment to a new urban agenda is the objective of Habitat III. By evaluating achievements since the establishment of the urban agenda in 1996, the aim was to respond to the challenges of combating poverty and inequalities, and to identify new challenges for the next 20 years. Habitat III constitutes a major event on the issue of cities, in a context marked by the new challenges of urbanization and the opportunities offered for the implementation of sustainable development objectives. The Habitat III Conference is strongly linked to the results of the Sustainable Development Goals Summit and the Climate Conference in 2015. It offered the opportunity to discuss policies and strategies to reaffirm the role of cities and territories as drivers of sustainable development.
